Message from the Mayor

Laurence Mawhinney, Mayor of Lunenburg

As Mayor of Lunenburg I am honored to welcome you to our unique and beautiful town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunenburg takes great pride in the distinct character of our community and we are eager to share our history and heritage with you.

You will want to stroll along the waterfront to see traditional tradespeople at work, explore the incredible stories of wooden ships and iron men at the Fisheries Museum and possibly catch our famous schooner Bluenose II at her home berth.

Special events throughout the season give residents and visitors the chance to experience our great community past and present. July begins with Canada Day festivities and features the German Band Concert, followed by the popular Lunenburg Craft Festival.

Highlights in August include the Lunenburg Folk Art Festival and our own Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival.  Join us in September for the annual Lunenburg Fishermen's Memorial Service.

In 1995, the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO confirmed what Lunenburg residents have known for generations—Old Town Lunenburg is an outstanding historical district worthy of world recognition and protection. Your visit to our town must include a tour, whether informal or guided, through this one-of-a-kind World Heritage Site.

History, architecture, industry, craft, music, food—whatever your interests, I am sure your Lunenburg experience will stand out as distinctively as the "Lunenburg bump" on our historic homes.

I hope you will stay long, take away great memories and return soon.

Yours very truly,

Laurence Mawhinney
